The Experience

Before You Go

No bags at the Visitor Center

The Navy prohibits most bags; bring only essential items in a clear bag or be prepared to use paid storage, which can delay your visit.

Sun and rain protection

Harbor exposure is direct—pack sunscreen, a hat, and a lightweight rain jacket as showers pass quickly in Hawaii.

Wear stable footwear

Expect boarding ramps, ship ladders, and walking on uneven decks—closed-toe shoes with grip are recommended.

Plan for mobility needs

Shuttle boats and some ship areas have stairs; contact the operator in advance for accessibility assistance or alternate arrangements.

Local Knowledge

Hidden Gems

  • Bowfin Submarine Museum and Park — a compact submarine exhibit adjacent to the visitor center
  • Views from the Ford Island causeway at sunset — often quieter and offers strong compositions of battleship silhouettes

Wildlife

  • Great egret and other shorebirds around the harbor edges
  • Green sea turtles occasionally seen in surrounding nearshore waters

Conservation Note

The National Park Service and Navy jointly manage preservation; visitors are asked to follow strict rules (no touching memorials, no collecting artifacts) to protect submerged remains and cultural resources.

Pearl Harbor remains a federally managed historic site where the December 7, 1941 attack and the formal Japanese surrender aboard USS Missouri bookend the U.S. role in WWII in the Pacific.
