The Experience

Before You Go

Check in early

Arrive 20 minutes before your scheduled start at Big Wave Dave (226 Lewers St) to sign waivers and get fitted for boards.

Use reef-safe sunscreen

Apply a high-SPF, reef-safe sunscreen before entering the water to protect coral and avoid reapplying while wet.

Hydrate and eat light

Have a light snack and hydrate 30–60 minutes before the lesson to maintain energy without cramping.

Listen to local etiquette

Yield to riders already on the wave, communicate with your instructor, and avoid stepping on exposed reef.

Local Knowledge

Hidden Gems

  • Kapiolani Park’s quieter east edge for a post-lesson stretch and views of Diamond Head
  • Duke Kahanamoku Statue and Kuhio Beach’s protected reef for easy snorkeling between sessions

Wildlife

  • Green sea turtles (honu) often seen near reef edges
  • Occasional Hawaiian monk seals hauled out on quieter stretches of sand

Conservation Note

Coral reefs near Waikiki are sensitive—use reef-safe sunscreen, avoid standing on coral, and follow local guidelines to reduce erosion and marine pollution.

Waikiki was an important surfing ground for Hawaiian royalty; modern surf culture here was popularized by Duke Kahanamoku in the early 20th century.
