The Experience

Before You Go

Bring reef-safe sunscreen

Apply reef-safe sunscreen before boarding and reapply with a towel to avoid contaminating coral and to reduce sunburn risk on open water.

Wear water shoes

Shallow reefs and rocky edges around beaches can be sharp—water shoes protect feet during short shore entries and scrambling.

Carry a small dry bag

Keep phones, passports, and extra cash dry while transferring between boat and shore; many boats get splashed during boarding.

Be mindful in jellyfish season

From May to October currents can bring jellyfish—consult your guide and wear a thin lycra top if you’re sensitive.

Local Knowledge

Hidden Gems

  • Talay Waek (the Koh Tup sandbar that emerges at low tide)
  • The small shrine inside Phra Nang cave—respectful viewing only, don’t remove offerings

Wildlife

  • Parrotfish and damselfish around the reefs
  • Occasional green sea turtle sightings

Conservation Note

Coral reefs in the area are fragile—use reef-safe sunscreen, avoid touching or standing on coral, and pack out all trash to limit impact.

Phra Nang cave has a long local history as a spirit shrine tied to fishing communities; offerings and carved phallic symbols reflect that living cultural practice.

Helpful for getting on/off boats and walking shallow reef/rocky shorelines without cuts.
