The Experience

Before You Go

Know the age & swim requirement

Participants must be at least 13 and competent swimmers — instructors won’t take non-swimmers into the lineup.

Arrive early to check in

The service counter is on the Royal Hawaiian pool deck accessible from Kalakaua Ave.; arrive 15 minutes early to fit the pre-water briefing.

Protect reef and skin

Bring reef-safe sunscreen and avoid stepping on coral; rash guards are sometimes provided but availability is limited.

Time lessons for calmer conditions

Morning sessions generally have softer winds and smaller waves; trade winds pick up in the afternoon and can make balance harder for beginners.

Local Knowledge

Hidden Gems

  • Kahanamoku Beach — a quieter stretch adjacent to the Royal with good photo angles of Diamond Head
  • Ala Moana Beach Park — a short walk west for a less crowded shoreline and calm lagoon swimming

Wildlife

  • Green sea turtle (honu) often seen offshore
  • Spinner dolphins occasionally visible beyond the reef

Conservation Note

Respect reef zones and use reef-safe sunscreen; avoid standing on coral and follow instructors’ guidance to minimize impact on marine life.

Waikiki is central to modern surfing history; native Hawaiian watercraft and royal surf rides evolved here and were popularized worldwide by Duke Kahanamoku.
