Freediving and Snorkelling the Caves of Chania — Crete’s Mediterranean Underworld
Float into a cobalt world with a local Cretan guide and spend four hours exploring sea caves, reefs, and underwater life off Chania. This private snorkel and freedive tour pairs hands-on instruction with the clear, wildlife-rich waters of northwestern Crete.
The Experience
Before You Go
Morning visibility matters
Aim for a morning start—calmer seas and cleaner water give the best visibility for both snorkelling and freediving.
Bring a thin wetsuit
Water can be cool even in summer below the surface; a 2–3mm wetsuit or shorty keeps you comfortable during long breath-hold sessions.
Use reef-safe sunscreen
Apply biodegradable, reef-safe sunscreen before entering the water to protect marine life and local reefs.
Know your current limits
If currents pick up, stay close to the guide and the shore—don’t push depth or breath-hold times beyond your training.
Local Knowledge
Hidden Gems

- •Mediterranean moray eel
Conservation Note
Use reef-safe sunscreen, avoid touching marine life or the seabed, and follow the guide’s instructions to minimize disturbance to sensitive habitats.
These coves and caves were used for shelter and fishing by local mariners for centuries; nearby shores show traces of Ottoman and Venetian maritime activity.
