The Experience

Before You Go

Protect turtle habitat

Keep a respectful distance from nesting turtles, follow roped-off areas, and never leave litter or use lights at night on Iztuzu Beach.

Wear water shoes

Mud baths and boat boarding are easier with closed-toe water shoes that grip wet surfaces and protect toes from rocks.

Sun and hydration

Summer sun is intense—carry at least 1–2 liters of water, high-SPF sunscreen, and a hat even for a half-day trip.

Timing matters

Start early to avoid the midday crowds and heat at Iztuzu; morning light is also best for photos of the Caunos tombs.

Local Knowledge

Hidden Gems

  • Sultaniye hot springs and mud pools near Köyceğiz—less crowded than major spas
  • The quiet western end of Iztuzu at sunset for shoreline birdwatching and silhouette views of the tombs

Wildlife

  • Loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta)
  • Wading birds such as herons and sometimes greater flamingo

Conservation Note

Iztuzu is a protected nesting beach with restrictions on development and night lighting; visitors are asked to follow local rules to limit disturbance to turtles and dune habitat.

The Caunos rock tombs are carved into the cliff face from Carian/Lycian periods; the ancient city of Kaunos was once an active port behind the reed beds.

Common Questions

Do we actually see turtles at Iztuzu Beach?

Iztuzu is an important nesting site for Caretta caretta; sightings are possible, especially during nesting season (May–August), though turtles are wild and not guaranteed.

Is the mud bath hygienic and included in the tour price?

Mud-bath access is normally included; facilities are simple and rinsing in nearby warm springs or shower stations is provided—bring a towel or rent one locally.

Is the tour suitable for children and wheelchair users?

The tour is family-friendly and the operator lists wheelchair access for transportation, but some boat and terrain sections may be challenging—check pickup details and accessibility before booking.

Can I swim at Turtle Beach on the same day?

Yes; Iztuzu has safe swimming areas, but watch for flagged zones during turtle season and avoid disturbing nesting sites.
